Curry Can be Healthy

It is often said that part of a poor diet is eating in Chinese and Indian restaurants because of some of the ingredients used. It does not have to be like that. If you cook at home (it doesn't take long) you can substitute olive oil for ghee and use less salt & sugar. Here is a recipe for a tried and tested lamb madras. It can be made less strong for those who like mild curries.

Remember Dig for Victory

Its time to grub up your garden to grow grub. The rising tide of comment and reporting on the high cost and shortages of food mean that it is only a matter of time before the government is putting more emphasis on people using their gardens to grow food. Not only is it more healthy but rising prices make it worthwhile.

Today the BBC at Radio Lincolnshire (94.9 & 104.7 FM) invited BabyBoomersUK to appear on the Dave Bussey morning show along with Judy Theobald. This is the second time of appearance and we had a most enjoyable session on life in the 1960s.

Hope for Arthritis Sufferers

It was announced in June that some new medications for arthritis sufferers might be made available soon subject to their approval by the National Institute for Health and Excellence (NICE). Now call me a right wing old cynic but doesn't that acronym just fit the image and personality of Labour governments. It is meant to give the impression of quality but is really about quantity (of money that is). Still in August, NICE approved the drug MabThera (rituximab) What they said was;

Waistlines

Did you see what was in the news this week about waist sizes and mortality? Apparently if you have a waist line of 38 inches you might be safe but if it's larger, then you are at risk from heart disease and other scary things.

Oh My I'm Getting Older and Showing It

Babyboomers born in the 1940s and early 1950s are, it has to be said, ageing a little. We might still be running and playing squash (well some of us anyway), but the knocks take longer to stop hurting and the aches get more frequent. Healthier, fitter and less worn out than previous generations yes, but still getting older and starting to feel it.

Blood Pressure

I've gone back to testing blood pressure. It's just about OK. Yesterday afternoon I recorded a reading of 127 over 69. It was the first time that I had used my new wrist mounted meter, bought over the internet for much less than the one in Boots.

More About Cholesterol

"Whilst the number of deaths from coronary heart disease (CHD) is falling, the number of people living with CHD and leaving the workforce prematurely is rising and is set to double over the next 25 years. According to a report from the World Health Organisation, globally, 60% of coronary heart disease and 40% of strokes can be attributed to unhealthy cholesterol levels".

Health and Blood sugar

After my cholesterol test I said that I was going to obtain a blood pressure testing kit. I did some research on the web and found that one of the UK's leading high street pharmacists sold different kinds. I went along to take a look.
