Before the seasons started changing, November was the month for pruning and digging. Nowadays, trees have not dropped their leaves in many parts of the country and the pruning might have to wait. Our BabyBoomersUK expert now prunes fruit trees in January.

With more waste being produced in the garden at this time of year, it is a good idea to start a compost heap or bin. Bins help to contain waste and keep things tidier. Put all of your waste vegetable peelings etc in it and layer with some twigs every now and then to let in air. Try to keep the compost moist and place a thin layer of leaves in too. Don't pile in thick grass cuttings, keep them airy and loose.

This will really help with improving your soil for vegetables next year, when you should be able to spread the friable product in the winter.
