October Week 3

If you are growing vegetables, there are several types from which it is worth saving the seed. Peas, beans, onions, shallots, leeks, tomatoes and lettuces are the usual kinds. Leave pea and bean pods until nearly dry. With onions and leeks, allow the seed stem to yellow and cut off, placing the stem and seeds in a bag. To elect the best leek seeds, rub the head on a fine sieve, put the seed in water and discard the seeds that float. Dry the rest and store in a paper bag.

While cleaning up remember not to compost diseased plants or cuttings, but burn them.

Plant out late summer sowings of winter and spring greens.
